evergreen yews

I live in an apartment complex and in the last several months watering has stopped in an area of yews which also contains 2 flowering trees. This is not a drought issue. Since the area involved slopes, the plants at the bottom are dry, brown with needles breaking off. I cannot find information about watering of yews. It does say they are hardy and drought resistant but how much should they be watered in a given week. This has caused conflict with management and tenants who are concerned about the landscaping. I live in Northern California which gets very hot summers. I would think they need some water. Please confirm. Thanks, Suzanne

Yes they need some water, right away. Dry, brown with needles breaking off is not good.

Under normal conditions for yews in Auburn area, I would think a deep watering twice a month would be adequate. (at least once a month bare minimum).

But with the trees under stress from withdrawn irrigation, I would deep water weekly now through October.

Watering on a slope takes diligent management to get penetration into the top 6 to 10 inches of soil without run-off. If the irrigation system is down, you can set up a hose-end impact sprinkler and watch the water for run-off on the slope, start and stop and check by digging down in spots, for minimum 6 inches of infiltration. Or set up several 50′ soaker hoses linked and serpentined throughout the root zone on the slope, start and stop when run off occurs, start again and do this all day when you are home and can watch and manage.

Home Depot has an aluminum tripod with and impact sprinkler head, at least they did two years ago when I bought one in the SF bay area. They also have 50 foot soaker hoses, as do most garden centers.

This is the beauty I have. The adjustable telescopic legs make it usable on a slope.
