end of season

What do you do with lilies at the end of the season? Also, is this hedge dying, and if so, what would the best type to plant? The ground is slightly dry, as it is slightly sloping and the water runs onto the pavement.

In gardening zones 5 through 9, most lily bulbs can be left in the ground. The leaves can be cut back after they have died, and mulch can be placed over the plants if necessary for cold protection. In colder climates, depending on the variety, the bulbs may need to be dug up and stored indoors.

I am not sure what type of shrub your hedge is. That might be a perfectly normal fall appearance for that plant, and it might grow leaves again next spring. Here’s how to tell if a shrub or tree is dead:
