Do fallen Ngaio tree leaves kill areas of grass

Areas of our lawn underneath the Ngaio tree appear to be dying. Can this be caused by the falling leaves? They do not lie thickly on the ground but are spread around.

The Ngaio tree was not one I was familiar with, so after a bit of research I believe it is entirely possible the leaves are damaging your lawn.

The leaves contain an oil that is considered highly toxic.

The recommendation is to remove any fallen leaves, little is mentioned about toxicity to other plant life, but the leaves are extremely toxic to people.

I would rake and remove the fallen plant material. It seems the best approach for people and your lawn.
