disease on plant

I have a plant that has what looks like salt on the leaves. It is a flowering plant. This salt-like stuff falls off the plant onto the table. What is this?

With just a description and no image or plant name it is difficult to say.
Insects can leave residue or if could even be pollen dropping from flowers.

Most pests can be treated with Neem Oil.
