Crepe Mrytle

My crepe mrytle was accidently cut at the base of the tree quite a bit before I caught the hired hand. Will my tree die? What can I do to prevent this from occuring?

This has happened to my crape mrytle before. It won’t die but it will come back as more of a bush than a tree.
