cleaning up a magnolia tree

Can you trim the little limbs that grow along the larger limbs of a 30 foot magnolia tree and leave only the leaves at the end of all the limbs? Like a canopy.

Here is a link with pruning information.
Magnolia generally only need some pruning when they are young plantings.
Pruning a mature Magnolia can cause stress and the death of the tree.
