Cherry tree

My cherry tree (don’t know the variety) started well this year. Suddenly, the leaves wilted and all the greenery died. Not sure if the moss killer my hubby used made it sick. Now it’s beginning of summer and there are sprouts coming up at the base of the tree. Can anyone give me an idea as to what’s going on? The tree seems to be like 3 to 5 years old. We have been here 2 years but the tree is not very large. Last year there were lots of cherries.

Though the images is blurry, I don’t see any leaves on your tree.
Do the branches bend or snap off?
You can also do the scratch test on the bark. If you scratch the bark and see green underneath it still has life.

Tree die off can be due to pest, disease, tree age or environmental issues.
Sometimes you don’t have a reason for the loss of a tree.

The lichen on the tree generally does not harm a tree but it may be more likely on a stressed or dying tree.

Your tree was likely a grafted stock tree. This would mean that a good producing or flavorful variety was grafted unto the stock of a more hardy variety of root stock. The growth you are seeing is from the root stock. It will not be the same as the original tree.

In this case, I would say you may want to remove this tree and start again.
