care of bird of paradise plants

I had a thriving bird of paradise plant, which spread and became several plants, all blooming…don’t know the type, but mostly orange, which suddenly started to yellow and the leaves look dry. We have an irrigation system, so they got water as usual twice a week, though we had less rain than usual. They are unsightly now. Should I just cut everything back to a few inches above ground? Or just the worst leaves? Do they need fertilizer? We had a cold spell, but it didn’t freeze here.(30 miles west of Daytona, FL) Also, the article said it could be from too much water or too little and I don’t really know which is true, though too little seems more likely. Will these plants come back after cutting, or just leaving alone, or should I just start over? I’m from Minnesota, never dealt with tropical plants before.

Your Bird Of Paradise may need more water and it could be time to divide the plants.
