canna lilies

I have lived in northern AR for 3 summers and have inherited maroon leafed canna lilies. I fertilized them this year and they got to be 5′ to 6′ tall. Finally one bloomed bright red and a storm knocked the bloom off before it could bloom. Now I have another one starting to bloom. When I try to goggle this canna lily all they seem to have are green leaves and plants about 3′ tall in pots or gardens.
Why is mine so different and do they need lots of water or can they withstand the AR mostly rainless summers?

Cannas are, typically drought tolerant, and can withstand short periods of dry. It is a possibility that you will have to wait until the next year to see flowers again. If you are concerned with frost, you can mulch with hay.
