Can You Identify The Plant Growing From My Turmeric Rhizome

I have attached a photo of the growth eminating from a rhizome in my turmeric garden bed I have 30+ turmeric plants starting to shoot (in Australia) but one looks more like a ginger plant. I have gently dug around the rhizome and it seems to be coming from the turmeric rhizome seen in the picture. I am mystified.

It could be that it is just a little growth that is less than desirable. I can't be certain from the photo. I could recommend, carefully, digging it up and putting it in a container to grow it under careful watch. Before you put it in, I would recommend looking at the root and smelling it. This will give you an idea if it is a mutated growth, or if it is a different plant.

This article will refresh you on the care requirements, in case you needed them (though you may not have to remove them from the ground in winter, since your climate is much different than ours):
