Can You Grow A Cactus From Roots Only?

I had a beautiful Old Man cactus. I transplanted it and it died a few days later. Yesterday morning it looked fine, but by night it had turned to mush. I think it was because I didn’t know that I had to wash the decorative sand that I using to increase drainage before adding it to the soil. The roots appear healthy. Can I plant the entire root system to grow another plant?

There are no guarantees but you can certainly try. Plant it in fresh cactus soil. I wouldn't water it for a couple of weeks.
