Butterfly bushes

Hi, We planted butterfly bushes last year, but so far have seen little evidence of any growth or greening this season. Are they slow to start in the spring, or is there something we need to do or be aware of regarding their care. I’ve seen some mention of pruning while searching Google, which is something we did not know might be necessary. Since they are basically brown at this point, we’re concerned that they might not come back. We are located in Massachusetts, just in case that helps you determine the problem, if there is one. Thanks, Darleen

Butterfly bush is late to emerge so hang in there. In MA, they will die way back in winter so cut them down to 9-12 inches late fall or early spring.
