Buttercup Squash

My buttercup squash has tan growths on the skin. It seems like other years there have been a few, but this year they are covering 1/4 to 1/2 of the squash. They stick out 1/4 inch from the skin and look like a scab or wart. The fruit inside seems to be normal. Is it okay to eat? What causes this blemish?

These is just scarring. If you had a windy year, the scarring will be more visible and deformed. It is perfectly safe to eat.
