Broccoli plant

We have 3 broccoli plants that we have planted and they had started to show a bit of a broccoli head, but they are really wide. A friend told us about tying up the broccoli plant so it’s not as wide and apparently helps it grow better. Is this a common practice or a myth? We have been having extremely hot weather here in Michigan this summer and have tried to keep the garden cool.
