rhododendron has no leaves on bottom

Bottom half of 10 ft tall rhododendron has no leaves. Top half is fine. Did deer eat leaves? Did winter do it?

Yes, deer love rhododendrons (particularly in winter) and a 5-foot browse line, with green leaves above and brown branches below, is usually a good indication that deer have been visiting your plant.
