Boston fern disease

My Boston fern has recently developed small tear-drop shaped bulbs on some of the stems. The fern has adequate light and water and is indoors. Several leaves have died. What has caused this, and what to do?

If so, it is perfectly normal, and provides an opportunity to propagate the plant if you choose.
