Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comI can usually pry them apart gently with a toothpick but what is causing this? Plant is maybe 18 years old. Started doing this with just a few 2 years ago, no happens to most of the blooms.

It could be that soil nutrition has been depleted too far, or that there is too much nitrogen, and not enough phosphorus and potassium in the soil. These articles will help:
