Bean and Pepper Plants being eaten

Question

Something is eating the tops (most of the plant) of my bush pole beans and bell pepper plants except for several inches next to the ground. Deer can not reach these plants. I have gophers, but they aren’t the culprit. There are raccoons and squirrels in the area. What could be doing this and what can be done to discourage the culprit?

Plants with the tops nipped off are usually the result of deer grazing in the garden. Even if you think they couldn’t possibly get to your plants, you never really know. They can be quite sneaky, so look for deer tracks just to be on the safe side. Squirrels will also munch on the tops of plants. In fact, a number of animals do. That being said, slugs are also known for devouring these plants and you won’t generally see them since they only come out at night to feed.
