Bamboo Care

Hello,

I have had my bamboo plant for 8 years now and have learned the ropes about watering, lighting, potting, etc. After 8 years it has had its problems here and there of which I have fixed, but now the leaves are turning more yellow than before and I am completed stumped on what to do. I change the water frequently, it is not in direct sunlight, with the wintertime and colder weather I was thinking maybe it has to do with that, but it has never reacted to cold weather before like it has this year. Please see my photos of the plant and help in any way you can. I have had this plant for a long time and it hurts me to see more leaves dying. Thank you.

You will be surprised to know that, even though it is called lucky bamboo… This is actually a species of dracaena! They do have slightly different care, but nothing drastic. Cold weather can definitely do this. I like to put just a small amount of tea, just a few drops, and a drop of honey when changing the water out. This can provide a little extra fertilizer that it can’t get from water alone. It would also help to put a little peroxide in with it. Just a few drops will be fine.

These are sensitive to cold, and can tolerate low light levels, so I do not think light is the issue… But it is has been subjected to the cold this can do it. If it seems that the roots are circling the container, then it may need to be repotted into a bigger one.
