Asparagus – First Year Sprouts

Planted asparagus in the early spring. Plants have sprouted with very thin fingering branches that are growing good. Should I snap off the sprouts or let them grow all summer and winter? I have snipped off some of them, at the top to taste them. When do I start adding more soil to the crowns? When do I start fertilizing?

Only cut asparagus plants in fall. Simply amend the soil every year with compost to fertilize. You can also add some more soil, if needed, during this time, along with mulch.
