Asparagus

How can I keep my asparagus from creeping out of its bed?
My asparagus bed is 4 ft. wide and 16 ft. long, bordered by 2 x 6 lumber. It is well established, started about 30 years ago. The last couple of years, the spears are coming up under the wood border and growing on the outside, only on one edge (the north) and not the other (south). I dug up the plants that were trying to escape and hope to put them back in the center, though I may wait until the harvest is done. Should I use an edging of some type that will prevent the plants from outgrowing their space?

What a wonderful sounding bed of Asparagus.
Since it is so well established, it likely is spreading out to gain more room.
You may want to lift some of the crowns and either divide and replant or even share with another gardener.
You can cut the seeds from the plants to eliminate reseeding.
