are roots a problem with fig trees

Are roots a problem with fig trees? I would like a fig tree but a gardener warned me that the roots would be a problem. Is this so?

With fig trees, you don’t need to worry so much about damage from the roots as long as there is adequate space on all sides for the roots to grow. The problem will really come in more from the branches. Figs like to spread out and need about 20′ – 25′ of space to accommodate their branch spread.
