After applying wood-based mulch

Good day! Thanks for your help! After applying the mulch, when we walk on the mulch, it compresses..we are wondering if we should be compressing the mulch as a final step or to leave it fluffy? Huge thanks!

The mulch naturally compresses over time.
I generally open a bag, dump it out in a scattered pattern and rake it to the depth that is needed.
