6 Year Old Hawthorn

Our hawthorn has beautiful leaves and sprouts along the branches and the trunk, only on the bottom half of it however the top has none , what could cause this

This is a condition known as "Dieback" and is caused by a number of issues. This can be due to several diseases, drought, and many other issues. The best thing to do will be to cut back the dead parts, and let the living portion grow out. If the dieback continues, you may need to contact your local extension service for treatment options:
