Zoysia tenuifolia – Seeds and Rolling to Flatten

Question

Hello – our gardener recommended Zoysia grass for our lawn. I did not think to question him as I read about Zoysia generally – I did not realise he meant zoysia tenuifolia – which a website says is the one zoysia that should not be used for a lawn. We dont use it very often but it is a flat area in the centre of the garden. We had it rolled out and 5 months on it is starting to really clump/becoming bumpy. Can we take a roller and try to flatten it a bit or would that damage the grass?
– Also – it has gone dark brown with appears to be seeds on top of the green grass …is this normal?
Any advice on how to make the zoysia as flat as possible?! We are in the south of Portugal.

I don’t think rolling it would hurt it in any way. It sounds like you have a fungal issue in the soil. Wettable sulfur can usually take care of the issue.
