Can zoysia be overseeded with rye grass in the fall to avoid a brown lawn in the winter?

You can, but it does not last long. Zoysia is such an aggressive grass that it will push out any competing grasses in a year or two. If you do overseeding, just expect that you will need to redo it every year or two to maintain it.
