How and when do you collect zinnia seeds

Seeds slowly mature on a flower head after the flower fades. Don’t cut off the flower until the seeds are ripe. It may take several weeks to reach ripeness, characterized by a totally brown seed head and brown stem below the seed head. Break the brown stem off into a paper bag and take inside, away from winds, to separate the seed. It is arrowhead shaped, brown and at the base of the petal. There are some zinnias that are so frilly with petals that they don’t make seed. The flowers are missing the central disk that has pollen and plant parts, stigma and stamen, for making seed.
