Q.Yucca Removal

Zone Westport, MA 02790 | Anonymous added on October 3, 2025 | Answered

Good Afternoon, I have been trying to get Yucca out of my garden for the better part of five years, including laying down cardboard over the affected area multiple times as well as pulling it out manually, all with no success. I had read that if you even nick it, it will sprout more shoots. I read an article from Texas A&M that successfully treats their farmlands by putting the herbicide Remedy directly into the whorl of individual plants with the theory that the herbicide travels only through the root system and does not kill surrounding plants. I called them yesterday and spoke to someone who said it’s a great success there but suggested I ask a local gardening specialist as she was not familiar with treating residential gardens. Are you familiar with this kind of treatment or something similar or even another option that would work? Its a very frustrating problem that I’m just tired of trying to fix with no success. Thanks so much for your time.

We don't make product recommendations but any non-selective herbicide (such as Roundup or Spectracide weed and grass killers) will kill plant leaves and roots without killing surrounding vegetation unless you spray them intentionally or unintentionally with spray drift. You can hold a piece of cardboard between what you are spraying and desirable plants to avoid drift.
