yellow flower

My father, who has passed, had these yellow flowers that bloom in the spring. The foliage is a deep green, height about 12-15″. They either reseed themselves or spread by roots. They bloom in May and then stop. Foliage appears to die but may be cut back to produce more leaves. The “babies” start to appear about that time. They are a circular shaped plant when first appearing but then grow taller. My brother and I both have these and would love to know their name. I am sorry no pic available at this time.
