Woodland Garden Design

We had to remove a number of mature ash trees due to damage from the emerald ash borer. Consequently, we lost our beautiful woodland garden area. Now the area is mostly sunny, but we would like to try to re-establish a woodland garden.

Do you have any suggestions for design ideas, types of plants, etc.? We garden in northeast Ohio, USDA zone 5b.
