There are several wisteria species. Most are rated for hardiness zones 5-9. Japanese wisteria is slightly more cold tolerant but a zone 3 winter may kill the top growth. Before you choose wisteria, make sure you understand the extensive pruning it needs, twice yearly where I live. It also needs a heavy, strong structure to climb. Without pruning, oriental wisterias can grow to hundreds of feet long while American wisteria tops out at 9 m/30 ft. Wisteria is said to be heat tolerant, providing it has enough water. In Las Vegas, I would site it where it gets a bit of shade or dappled sun in the afternoon. Here are growing instructions and comparisons of the 3 main species. There are cultivars available.
