Q.Wire Wrapped Around Tree Trunk Embedded Into Wood Restricting Growth.
Crape myrtle with trunk 3″ diameter 12′ tall. Tree appears healthy now. Wire from bird house was attached in 2 places. Wood has completely enclosed wire and cannot be removed except where bird house was. Is it a good idea to make vertical cuts into the trunk & across wire in several locations to allow for expansion? Any other ideas? If I do nothing, I am afraid the tree will eventually die.

It sounds like the tree has already compensated for the wire. If the wire is completely encased, you will do more harm trying to remove it. If you cut into it, you allow the chance for disease and insects to enter.
You may want to call your local extension office and ask their advice, too.
