Winterizing canna lilies

1) I can’t get a lot of the dirt off because so many roots and new sprouts. I have way too many and don’t have the time to scratch the dirt off. Can I just put them in paper leaf bags the way they are as long as the dirt has dried out?
2) I dug them up before the frost got the leaves. Will this make a difference in the outcome next spring?
3) Can I cut some of the roots off of the bottom to help air out the dirt?

It is best to dig the Canna up from the soil when the first frost has killed off the foliage.

This article will help you with winterizing.
