Q.Wintering A Penstemon Red Riding Hood

Zone 53188 | Anonymous added on September 28, 2021 | Answered

I live in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I recently was given a Penstemon Red Riding Hood in a pot, it had never been put in the ground. Can I winter this plant somehow and plant it next spring?

It is hardy in zones 5 to 8 and you are in hardiness zone 5. If it were in the ground it would be OK for the winter. Since it is in a pot, the roots will freeze if it doesn't get protection. You can overwinter it in a frost free area like the garage (if it is frost free) or a basement. You can also bring it indoors to a cool room near a sunny window. Water sparingly during the winter
