Once a month watering should be sufficient enough to keep them from drying out completely. I would not keep it in too much sun, as it needs to go dormant for winter.
If it’s already been accustomed to an indoor environment, then you could bring the plant inside for overwintering. Otherwise, you will have to provide adequate cold protection, such as wrapping the container/plant.
