Early Italian garlic cloves

Will the Early Italian garlic cloves I planted in April in Wisconsin be able to form decent sized bulbs? Most articles say to plant garlic in fall but I forgot, so I ordered Early Italian softnecks for braiding this spring. Do you have any advice on how I can grow them to a decent size by end of summer or fall here in SE Wisconsin? I planted them with our garden compost mixed into the soil, side-dressed with the same and watered with a high nitrogen fertilizer (one time). What else should I do? Thanks in advance. Linda
