Will picking flowers off arbutus plant kill it

Would like to know if picking arbutus flowers killed the arbutus plants years ago.

My research indicates that this is very possible if the flowers were improperly picked. Given that the stems of the arbutus plant are tough, it is very easy to dislodge the plant by its roots and many arbutus plants have perished at the hands of flower pickers.
