Will My Big Box Balls Come Back After Loosing Much Foliage At End Of Extreme Wet Winter

They were healthy long established plants last year. By March some had lost nearly all foliage. I have fed them vigorously and even baldish ones are shooting green inside. Will they return? Was original problem root rot? If so do you advise a grit mix to help drainage or something else? Grateful to you for your help !

Don't overdo on the fertilizer! It could be boxwood blight which causes defoliation. The leaves can regrow, however, most people remove the plants.
