Q.Will My Avocado Tree Ever Bloom?

Zone 33309 | Anonymous added on March 19, 2025 | Answered

Hello. I recently read Bonnie L Grant’s piece on why Avocado trees won’t bloom. I had to cut down both my Florida Avocado trees (large green fruit) that were hollow and eaten up with termites. Years later I have let a tree grow back from the root/stump on each. It has been 8 years and every year I have massive clusters of new leaf buds that I think are flowers, but they all turn into leaves. Is there a fertilizer for blooming I can add? I’ve even tried grafting scions but they failed. Any tips would be wonderful

Most avocado trees are grafted so what grew for you may be the rootstalk. It usually is not ideal to grow the rootstalk alone. Your trees may never produce fruit and if they do, the fruit will probably be inferior to the original trees You may want to start over with a newly purchased tree.
