Will lilac bushes live if buds were eaten?

I just planted two lilac bushes yesterday that had small buds on them. Something ate the buds. Will this kill the plants?

You'll need to inspect your plant's leaves and stems, but if it's only the buds that are being eaten, I am suspicious that you may have slugs or snails visiting in the night. I'd clip back the damaged parts of the plant and treat for everything. Here are a couple articles that will help:
