Will Japanese beetles kill established plants

Will Japanese beetles kill established perennials, shrubs or trees? I am a professional landscaper specializing in native plant gardens in Maryland, USA. I receive many questions about Japanese beetles and what to do about them. My experience and intuition tell me that the beetles are pesky but not a serious threat to an established garden. I understand that the beetles cause damage and may make the plants look a little beat up but they don’t seem to kill anything or cause lasting damage. Am I wrong about this? Keep in mind I am not concerned with vegetable crops or annuals.

I would disagree, Japanese Beetles will devour plants. Perennials have disappeared within a few days in my own garden under the vicious Japanese Beetles!
