Will Gladiolus bulbs die if left in the ground

If I do not dig up the gladiolus bulbs each year, will they die, rot or not bloom again?

My mother, in North West Pa, never dug her glads, and they would flower, but they’d get fewer and smaller every year, until she had to get a new bunch. Most gardeners agree that you have better luck with them if you dig and store them.
