Will figs grow after super storm Sandy

My property had 5 feet of ocean water on it during Super Storm Sandy. The original branches and trunk died after the storm I never removed the tree. Now 6 years later the leaves are growing on new branches. The this year and last year I noticed small figs growing but they never mature.
Will my tree ever produce edible figs again? Is there anything I can do to help it?
I have the green skin variety.

My inclination is to have it removed. If it’s been six years and the tree is still struggling along, it’s got problems. You might call the local extension agent who probably is aware of the same issue with others and see if anyone else’s tree recovered.
