Will Butternuts Ripen?

We recently lost a large butternut tree. We have collected the nuts but it is just the beginning of August. Will they mature? We opened one and the nut was not completely formed, was very soft and white

I couldn't find any source that said whether they would ripen off the tree, but a source for black walnuts said they are best harvested when mature. You may try contacting the closest University extension office.
