Will a Fig Sucker Grow Into a Fruit Bearing Tree

A friend of ours has a fig tree and we took one of the limbs close to the ground with roots on it and planted it. I realized it may just be a sucker and was wondering if it would grow to bear fruit or whether I should spend my time on a tree to plant for fruit?
