purple lilac tree turning white and brown

Why is my purple lilac tree turning white and brown in May? The tree is over 50 years old. I want to preserve the purple and fragrance now in this blooming season. Help.

Did you have a late season cold snap in your area? It may be that the cold snap affected the blooms. If it is only the blossoms that are white and brown, this may very well be the issues. The blooms are far more tender than the leaves, so a cold snap that did not affect the leaves would burn the blossoms.
