Why isn’t my apricot tree producing leaves?

I planted a young apricot tree last summer in my yard in central MI. It is in a location with a good 8+ hours of sun. I did bury my dog under the tree soon after it was planted. It produced a few apricots late last summer. This year, it still has hardly any leaves on it. The leaves it has look healthy, but you have to get right next to it to see them, as they are so few and small. Any ideas what’s going on?

The highest probability is that your tree is suffering winter damage, especially since it was a newly planted tree. Take a look at this article: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/tgen/tree-leafing-problems.htm ^[1]

Trees can take several years to completely recover from winter damage.
