Q.Why Is Our Crepe Myrtle Sprouting New From Roots

I cut down a mature (35+ year old) crepe myrtle two years ago. In addition to fresh sprouts at the remaining trunk, there are numerous areas in the vicinity where new sprouts are appearing randomly in the yard. I assume from roots. What can I do to kill this underground tree?

You can spray a stump killer or non-selective herbicide where you cut back the emerging suckers, especially around the trunk. Here is more:
