Q.Why Is My Silver Falls Dying?

I live in zone 9 My first attempt was to grow a store bought 4 in plastic pot outdoor in partial shade . I water it once a week The leaves turn gray in three weeks and died. This is July in Northern California. Then I got a second one and put it indoor. It is under a skylight and I water it 2-3 times a week. The leaves are starting to turn gray again. Why are they dying?

Unfortunately, you photos did not come through. I am unable to diagnose the problem. It could be that the plant was overcrowded in its container. This can happen if left too long in the container that it came in. Usually, plants will need to be transplanted soon after purchasing.
