Why Is My Japanese Maple Green and Not the Bright Red?

I have a Japanese maple that I grew from an off spring seedling. My landscaper kept it safe for the winter and I planted it in my garden about 3 years ago. Amazing how much it has grown-just close to 6′. Every year it has had the beautiful red color that people love about these trees. This spring, however, it started out red and now is a greenish color. Just recently a new growth sprung in it deep red. Any idea why my tree is green?

Have you tried using a soil acidifier ? Miracle- Gro should help.
